DOMPERIDONE - ORAL

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Motilium
USES: This medication is used to treat disorders caused by decreased movement of the stomach and upper intestines (e.g., diabetic gastroparesis, gastritis). It works by increasing stomach emptying and movement of the upper intestines. Treating these disorders can help decrease symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, heartburn, and constant feeling of stomach fullness. This medication is also used to prevent side effects (e.g., nausea, vomiting) from certain medications used to treat Parkinson's disease (e.g., levodopa, dopamine agonists such as pergolide). OTHER USES: This section contains uses of this drug that are not listed in the approved professional labeling for the drug but that may be prescribed by your health care professional. Use this drug for a condition that is listed in this section only if it has been so prescribed by your health care professional. This drug may also be used to treat nausea and vomiting from other causes (e.g., chemotherapy, migraine headaches).

HOW TO USE: Take this medication by mouth, usually 3 to 4 times daily (15 to 30 minutes before meals and at bedtime) or as directed by your doctor. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. For children, the dosage is also based on weight. Do not increase your dose or take this medication more often than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and the risk of serious side effects may be increased. If you also take antacids, take this medication 2 hours before or after antacids. Antacids may decrease the absorption of this medication. Also consult with your doctor if you take drugs that may decrease stomach acid (e.g., H2 blockers such as ranitidine, proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole). Tell your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

SIDE EFFECTS: Headache, dry mouth, diarrhea, or abdominal cramping may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: fast/irregular heartbeat, swelling of the ankles/feet, unusual tiredness, mental/mood changes (e.g., nervousness, irritability), hot flashes, breast swelling/pain, unusual leakage of milk from the breast, changes in menstrual periods, decreased sexual ability. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but very serious side effects occur: muscle stiffness/spasm/twitching, severe dizziness, fainting. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

PRECAUTIONS: Before taking domperidone, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies. This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: recent stomach/intestinal surgery, bleeding/blockage/hole in the intestines/stomach, a certain tumor of the pituitary gland (prolactinoma). Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: breast cancer, liver disease, kidney disease, heart disease (e.g., QTc prolongation), decreased or no stomach acid (achlorhydria). Children may be at greater risk for muscle stiffness/spasm/twitching while using this drug. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Domperidone passes into breast milk in small amounts. While there have been no reports of harm to nursing infants, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: See also How to Use section. Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first. This drug should not be used with the following medications because very serious interactions may occur: drugs that may affect the heart rhythm (QTc prolonging drugs such as bepridil, cisapride, disopyramide, droperidol, halofantrine, levomethadyl, pimozide, ranolazine, sparfloxacin), pramlintide. If you are currently using any of these medications listed above, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting domperidone. Other drugs besides domperidone and those listed above that may affect the heart rhythm (QTc prolongation in the EKG) include amiodarone, ziprasidone, mesoridazine, thioridazine, dofetilide, quinidine, sotalol, procainamide, and erythromycin, among others. QTc prolongation can infrequently result in serious (rarely fatal) irregular heartbeat. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details, and for instructions on how you may reduce the risk of this effect. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: antacids, antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine), antispasmodics (e.g., atropine), drugs affecting liver enzymes that remove domperidone from your body (such as cimetidine, HIV protease inhibitors including ritonavir, azole antifungals including ketoconazole, rifamycins including rifabutin, certain anti-seizure medicines including carbamazepine), drugs that decrease stomach acid (e.g., H2 blockers such as ranitidine, proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole), MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine), narcotic pain medications (e.g., morphine), tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline).

OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call the US National Poison Hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Canada residents can call a provincial poison control center. Symptoms of overdose may include: fast/slow/irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, drowsiness, muscle stiffness/spasm/twitching.

MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.

STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets. Properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company for more details about how to safely discard your product.
